'There is a little boy standing beside my bed, I wake up and he is staring at me. I’m not sure how many other mothers wake to this, but I get to daily. Because Garcia is a non-verbal child at this stage of his life, I have surprise moments like this quite often. He can’t call me from his room, which means without words we daily forge and build our bond in ways and spaces that look quite unique. At first it was unsettling never knowing when he may be hungry, thirsty, coming down the passage or even tired. It has taken countless moments of observing, understanding and recognizing his gestures – now its not unsettling but rather a new language and the uncommon path with our son. It’s often said "kids grow up so quickly, slow down, enjoy the moments"…etc… well, our journey with a non-verbal child has done just that, it has slowed it all down. There are no quick or fast moments, in fact some days they feel mostly like they are in slow motion.
